Community Gardens Program 2020 2021
A Global Landcare initiative funded by a generous donation from Beyond Subsistence
Thanks to a generous donation from Beyond Subsistence, Global Landcare has funded 12 community garden projects.
Five projects in Uganda and seven in Zimbabwe.
Kibuye Urban Farming Community Community Garden
Establishment of the Kibuye Urban community project is targeted to start early next year 2021 and this projected is aimed at improvement of the livelihoods of the people staying in the slums of Kibuye a Kampala suburb. Many of the targeted beneficiaries are the refugees from the re-settlement centers, Widows and Orphans, and the residents of the Single-family houses who have lost jobs as impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kabale Agroforestry Network (KAN) Growing Nutrition
KAN intends to set up 2 community gardens located at Hornby High School Junior and Kabale Primary School in Uganda. The goal of the project is to ensure sustainable production and consumption of nutrient- rich foods by the pupils, teachers, parents and community members. The project will build on previous work and support the beneficiaries to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits throughout the year using modern agronomical practices. A nutrition component will be integrated in the project with a cadre of lead mothers/fathers and parents from the community trained to take charge of nutrition in their homes. A demonstration garden will also be set up at a selected parent volunteer in a nearby village to be used as a community learning centre. A roadside kiosk will be set up outside the primary school to market the excess production for income.
Omoro District Landcare Chapter (ODLACC)
The project aims at training farmers to establish, manage and scale community gardens in their households.The project will involve collective action among village members to train together, establish the community garden involving indigenous vegetables some of them have been neglected but are very nutritious and must be preserved. The project will continue to produce seedlings for members on a sustainable basis.
National Teachers College Sustainable Food Security Project
Food security project started as a teaching project to provide student teachers with knowledge and practical skills to take in their respective districts of Uganda that would further trickle down to their communities for sustainable food security. The project intends to be a model garden to benefit the students as a source of food throughout the year and NTC-Kabale community as well as a learning centre for pattern schools and communities around the college.
Ikamiro community livelihood enhancement project
Ikamiro community enhancement project intends to support 95 households who are active members of Ikamiro community land care association in establishment of community gardens which will help beneficiaries to improve on food security, nutrition and household incomes. This project will have 95 community gardens distributed among household members and will also have one Central garden for vegetable Nurserybeds and demonstrations. This project will also assist beneficiaries with garden tools to help them in doing land preparation.
Revival of Chiurai Community Garden, Gokwe South
The project seeks to improve and scale up activities of Chiurayi Community Garden in Gokwe South, Zimbabwe by increasing suitable irrigated land, water storage capacity, purchasing of adequate tools, machinery and installation of water pipeline system.
Zengeza 3 High School Empowering the Agriculture Student
The project will utilise the 2ha Zengeza 3 High School land for the growing of vegetables, involving Agriculture students (14-17 years) as participants. Learners from diverse backgrounds will work side by side with common goals. It will run for about 6 months through provision of land, resources and teachers demonstrating on a variety of growing methods.
Zimconserve Resource Centre Permaculture design gardens
Zimconserve is set to establish permaculture design nutrition gardens at Zimconserve Resource Centre,Chipere village,Seke rural. The designs include among others, mandala gardens, crescent gardens, ring spanner gardens and keyhole gardens.
Forestry Commission Muyambi Primary School
The project involves fencing of 2 hectares of land to enclose the recently established orchard with 400 fruit trees and accommodate establishment of 1 hectare of eucalyptus species. More fruit trees will be planted to extend the existing orchard.
Kubatana Mapfungautsi Agroforestry and Garden Club
Resuscitation Of Kubatana Mapfungautsi Agroforestry And Garden Club,Gokwe South,Zimbabwe. The Project Is Meant To Boost Agroforestry And Garden Activities In Gokwe South,Zimbabwe By Procuring Adequate Materials And Equipment And Also The Installation Of Water Tanks On Each And Every Classroom Blocks{Total 10 Blocks} To Ensure Constant Supply Of Water During The Dry Spells.
Hope for Kids, Zimbabwe School based Community Gardens
Improving the livelihoods of children through promoting healthy eating and for community members to have enhanced practical reality based learning from the school garden under the watchful eyes of the agricultural department. The Chitakatira school garden will give the cherished interaction between students and the community members, and serve as a study centre for best agricultural practices, proceeds from the garden will be distributed amongst the garden members and some sold to realize income which will be administered by the garden committee. The benefit of these school based gardens will not only improve the nutrition of our children but it will enhance students’ life skills that they can use in their journey of life.
Hope for Kids, Zimbabwe Kaswa Community Garden
We seek to establish a community garden project in Kaswa for the community members to grow vegetables to sell and to use in their households .These community gardens will help them earn a living through selling of their produce and also ensure that they get a sustainable source of vegetables for their domestic purposes and he plan is that we purchase a garden fence(a great need) and pipes (300 metres) to channel water to the garden and also seed.
